The Blog-o-Rama Spooky Fest: Hack!

A Horror Film With Wonder Years Winnie Cooper!

Danica Mckellar In Maxim Magazine.

key_art_hack That's right.  As soon as I saw that Danica Mckellar starred in this movie that was showing on Hulu.com, I just knew it needed to be posted on the blog-o-rama for our ongoing Spooky Fest Celebration!  The Wonder Years was a great show (that is where the character Winnie Cooper appeared) and since it appears that it will never be released on DVD,  (because of it's vast library of songs that was used in the soundtrack, the owners of the show say paying royalties would make it cost prohibitive) what better way to see Winnie than in an R-rated horror flick from 2007.

What's the plot of Hack! about?  Well, according to IMDB.com, it goes like this:

Seven college students, who make up of the bookish Emily; friendly bad-guy Johnny; punk girl Maddy; the token gay Ricky; gangster-rapper 'Q'; British exchange student Sylvia; and football stud Tim; are picked to travel to a private island owned by the reclusive Vincent King and his film-obsessed wife Mary Shelley to study island wildlife. But is isn't long when a mysterious killer begins killing the students one-by-one, and modeling them after gory murder scenes from numerous horror films. Are the eccentric Vincent and Mary Shelley the killers? if so, who is the mysterious fisherman lurking around the grounds of the island? Plus, does Emily know a lot more of what is going on then she claims to?

And at RottenTomatoes.com, we get this description, which made a little more sense to me.

Vincent King (Sean Kanan) and his wife, Mary Shelley (Juliet Landau), are two deranged cinephiles who decide to create the ultimate homage to classic horror films by shooting a snuff movie. When a group of college students, led by the studious Emily (Danica McKellar), sails to the King's remote island to study the local wildlife, the homicidal couple inherit the perfect cast for their horrific project.

Also, while I'm on the subject of McKellar, I didn't realize until looking up her bio that she has also appeared on a lot of other TV shows (usually in guest appearances) since she finished college and grew up, including episodes of WITHOUT A TRACE and NCIS as well as extensive voiceover work and roles in writing, producing, and directing.

To be honest, I have just begun to watch this film so I can't tell you what Danica's role in the film actually consists of, other than that she plays the bookish Emily.  Burt Young (Pauley from the Rocky films) also appears in the film.

And now, without further ado, here is Hack!

Pie Splatter King 'Soupy Sales' Dead At 83

A hand puppet featuring a likeness of Sales.Image via Wikipedia

Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances that spanned a half-century, has died. He was 83.

Sales was born Milton Supman on Jan. 8, 1926, in North Carolina and grew up in Huntington, West Virginia, close to my hometown of Portsmouth, Ohio. I remember that he was always considered a hometown favorite and that Huntington considered him as one of their own.

The comic's pie-throwing schtick became his trademark, and celebrities lined up to take one on the chin alongside Sales. During the early 1960s, stars such as Frank Sinatra, Tony Curtis and Shirley MacLaine lined up on his show to get splattered with pies right alongside Soupy.

Perhaps one of the most memorable points of his career was when he was temporarily suspended for telling the kids at home to collect all of the green pieces of paper from their mother's purses that had pictures of presidents on them and to mail them to him. In fact, Saturday Night Live once paid homage to that event by encouraging their audience to send in their joints. Aspects of Paul Reuben's Pee Wee Herman character appeared to be associated with Sales TV persona.

Yes, in this year of celebrity deaths, another great one has died. Enjoy the clips from Soupy's show that I have added as a tribute to this comedy legend.

The Guns Of Will Sonnett: A Great Western That Was Totally Underrated.

Somewhere deep in my memory I always remembered the title of this show, but couldn't tell you if I ever watched it when it originally aired on ABC.  The show aired from 1967-1969 for two seasons and starred Walter Brennan and Dack Rambo as Grandfather and Grandson journeyed across the country in search of their son and father, James Sonnett.

James had a reputation for being a notorious gunslinger and every place they went their were people who wanted him dead.  In many cases they went after Will and his Grandson because they were related.  Each half hour episode found them in a new city with new guest stars.

Unlike most series with a similar premise, the problem was resolved during the life of the series. In the second season finale, "Three Stand Together", Will and Jeff eventually located and linked up with James. The three became lawmen together in a small town, Will as town marshal and the other two as his deputies. Had there been a third season for this series, it would have been as a much more conventional Western.

The entire series was released by Timeless Video which has also issued many other classic westerns.  They specialize in series that the bigger video companies have decided not to release and I have several others including, M Squad, starring Lee Marvin, Wagon Train, the complete color season, Tales Of Wells Fargo, starring Dale Robertson, and Branded, with Chuck Connors.  Any of these series are available at Amazon.Com or at TimelessVideo.Com.

I'm posting this article because I see that a lot of people are visiting this blog looking for an article on Will Sonnett because of the information I have on the show in the sidebar.  Most of the query's are for the opening theme of the show and you will find that in the video above.  Below, in three parts, is an episode of The Guns Of Will Sonnett.

In this episode, Will pleads Jeff's case after a lynch mob accuses the boy of murdering a storekeeper.

Mary and Max: Watch It On Demand At Sundance Selects.

This looks like a terrific stop motion film that is actually based on a true story.  As you can see from the trailer, it's not really a movie for young kids.  If you have On Demand, by all means see it.

The following cable providers are carrying it:  Bright House, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox, and Time Warner.

Spanning 20 years and 2 continents, Mary and Max tells of a pen-pal relationship between two very different people: Mary Dinkle (Collette), a chubby, lonely 8-year-old living in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia; and Max Horovitz (Hoffman), a severely obese, 44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger’s Syndrome living in the chaos of New York City.

The Blog-o-Rama Spooky Fest: Frankenstein's Castle Of Freaks

Hosted By Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark

Brazzi plays mad Dr. Frankenstein, Dunn is an evil dwarf and Lugosi (no relation to Bela) is a Neanderthal man. Add a monster named Hulk, and some nude women for sexploitation value. Terror stalks the castle when the secret of life falls into the wrong hands.

Starring Rossano Brazzi and Michael Dunn (famous for his portrayal as Dr. Miguelito Loveless on "The Wild Wild West", this is an Italian film that was originally titled "Terror! Il castello delle donne maledette"  It was released in the USA in 1975.

This is one of the films featured on Elvira's Movie Macabre.
