Dragonball Z: Burst Limit Terrific Fun/ Few Complaints

My son, who is thirteen, has several different versions of the Dragonball Z games. Dragonball Z: Burst Limit is the first release for the NextGen platforms of PS3 and XBox 360. When we went into testing this game, we were curious as to how the graphics and gameplay would compare to past editions.

After about a week of both of us playing together and in single player mode, I'm happy to report that with just a few gripes here and there, Dragonball Z: Burst Limit will not disappoint fans of DBZ. For those not familiar with the series, you'll soon be shouting KAMEHAMEHA!

Breaking it down on my one to five scale:

  • Package Design 5

  • Character Options 4

  • Graphics 5

  • Intensity 4

  • 2 Player Mode 5

  • Z Chronicles 5

  • Trials 5

  • Training 5

  • Controls 5

From the opening theme song to the credits, the graphics blow away other editions of DBZ. The XBox 360 really kicks it up a notch. The gameplay is such that although it's very challenging, the ease of use of controllers actually makes it easier than in past versions to achieve the characters special moves. At the same time, it takes a little away from them and makes them a little less dramatic. However, that being said, almost any age, with a bit of practice, can have a great time playing this. I like games that are not so challenging that you get so frustrated that you never finish it.

Now, for just a few gripes.

  1. It was a bit too easy going through the Z Chronicles. My son actually made it through in one day. Add more levels or sagas in future editions. Gameplay in this mode could last longer.

  2. 23 characters to play with is a little chintzy. Adding more characters would enhance the gameplay.

  3. Some of the characters fighting styles are repetitive. Every character should feel different when playing.

These are only minor quibbles as I seldom have played a game that there wasn't one thing or another I wish could be changed.

So, how does this all add up? Dragonball Z: Burst Limit recieves 4.8 out of 5.
